The same triple, nine weeks apart
Three-fifteen for a triple, week one of the block. The bar felt like RPE 7, maybe less. You logged it and moved on.
Nine weeks later, same triple, same plates, and the third rep grinds to a near-stall. RPE 9. You log that one too, then forget it by the time the bar is racked.
Both numbers are sitting in your training app right now. Neither is telling you anything useful, because you keep reading them one at a time. The set that mattered was never a single entry. It was the line those two points sit on.
The drift line
Anchor the load. Watch the RPE. That climb, same weight logged week over week, is the drift line, and it is the most useful thing your log quietly records.
A session RPE answers a small question: how did today go. The drift line answers the one that decides your next month: is the block feeding you or draining you. Rising effort at a fixed load is the earliest honest readout of fatigue accumulation you have, and it shows up in the numbers a week or two before it shows up in how you feel walking into the gym.
Most lifters have this data. Almost none of them read it as a slope.
Why 'RPE is a dial' is only half the tool
RPE got taught to serious lifters as an autoregulation dial. You walk up to the bar, read the effort, adjust the day's load or reps, and that is real: same-day autoregulation is where RPE earns its keep in-session.
RPE was never only a dial for today, though. It is a repeated measurement of the same lift under the same load over time, and that repeated measurement is the part almost everyone throws away. The number gets used to decide the next set, then it goes cold in a row of the log nobody scrolls back to.
The per-session read is the least durable thing RPE captures. The block-length trend is the most durable, and it is the one your app buries.
The discourse is loud about the set and silent about the season
The live debate around RPE is almost entirely about the single rep. Reliability studies in journals like Frontiers in Physiology have examined how accurately trained lifters estimate reps-in-reserve on a given set, and the findings are mixed enough that the calibration debate never fully closes. Coaching sites like rpetraining.com and the recurring r/Fitness and Boostcamp threads argue calibration, honesty, half-point inflation, RPE versus percentage loading.
Every one of those conversations lives inside one workout. The retrospective layer, RPE plotted across twelve-plus weeks at a fixed load, barely gets discussed, and no mainstream tracker surfaces it. Strong, Hevy, Jefit, and Fitbod all store a per-session RPE. None of them hand you the moving average, which is the one view that turns the number from a diary entry into a fatigue gauge.
What a drift read actually needs
Three things, all of which your log already has: a fixed load anchor (the same working weight, e.g. your top set at 315), enough sessions (roughly 8 to 12 exposures of that lift), and a rolling mean rather than a single-session read. Without the load anchor the trend is noise, because rising RPE on rising weight tells you nothing.
Two lifters, same weight, twelve weeks
Picture two lifters running the same block, both benching 315 for a triple as their main heavy set, both logging RPE every week.
The first is recovering well. Her RPE oscillates in a band, drifts up inside each three-week wave, then resets after a planned deload. The load is holding steady and so is the effort it costs her. That is adaptation: the trend line is flat across the block even though any single week looks like it's climbing.
The second is grinding. Same 315, and his RPE walks up almost monotonically, week after week, with no reset. By week ten the triple that opened at RPE 7 is costing him RPE 9.5. Nothing in a single session screams. The slope does. He needed a deload around week eight, and the drift line was saying so two weeks before his top set actually stalled.
Read either lifter's log one row at a time and both look fine. Read the trace and one of them is walking into a wall.

A single RPE is a mood. Twelve weeks of RPE at the same load is a diagnosis.
What changes when a number becomes a slope
Treat the drift line as the real signal and your deload stops being a calendar decision. It becomes a reading. You stop deloading on week eight because the template said week eight, and you stop pushing through a grind because it 'feels mental.' The slope tells you which one you're in.
It also changes what you demand from a log. A tracker that only ever shows you the last number is asking you to hold twelve weeks of context in your head, which no one does past a couple of sessions. The moment the trend is the thing that matters, the per-session display is the wrong default. You need the average, moving, at a fixed load, drawn as a line you can glance at between sets.

What we're watching next
RPE drift is the cheapest longitudinal fatigue signal because you're already logging it. It is not the only one. Bar speed at a fixed load falling across a block, heart-rate drift creeping up during the same working sets, session-to-session recovery on your openers: each is a second trace that either confirms the RPE line or argues with it. The interesting question is where two of those traces disagree, because that gap is usually where the truth about your fatigue is hiding. That's the next layer worth reading.
