Every return-to-training protocol treats you like a novice. If you've trained for years, your own log already recorded how fast you rebound.

The panic at week three

Three weeks back from a two-week work trip, the bar feels wrong.

The squat that used to sit at RPE 7 is grinding at what feels like a 9. The lifter racks it, opens a browser, and types some version of "how long to get strength back after a layoff." What comes back is the same advice every time: drop to 60 percent of your old max, add 5 percent a week, be patient, it takes a while. Generic, cautious, written for nobody in particular.

Here's the part that stings. This lifter has done this before. Last winter, flu knocked out ten days of training, and the log has every session from the climb back out. The exact answer to "how long" is already in the phone. It just never got read.

Your comeback curve is already drawn

Call it your comeback curve: the shape your strength takes on the way back from a break, measured not in load but in how hard a fixed load feels over successive weeks.

An intermediate lifter has run this experiment at least once. Travel, illness, a move, a busy quarter at work, a bad back week. Every one of those left a gap in the log and a climb back out on the other side. And that climb is data. It tells you, in your own numbers, how many weeks it took last time for a sub-maximal weight to stop feeling like a max effort.

That's your readaptation rate. Not the population average. Yours.

Every comeback article thinks you're a beginner

Search "returning to lifting" and the top results converge on one assumption: you have no usable history, so start conservative and generic. Sixty percent, linear ramp, six to eight weeks, good luck.

That advice isn't wrong, it's just written for the wrong person. It's the correct answer for a true beginner or someone coming back from something serious. It's a poor fit for a lifter with four years of logged training and a documented layoff already behind them, because it throws away the one input that would actually sharpen the estimate.

The tracking apps don't help here. Strong, Hevy, and Jefit all faithfully record every set of every comeback you've ever run. None of them read that history back to you when you start the next one. The pattern is sitting in the export, and the app treats each return like the first one.

Strength returns on a schedule your body already ran

Strength comes back faster than it was built the first time. Any lifter who's taken a forced two or three weeks off and been near baseline within a month already knows this in their hands, not from a paper. The tissue and the nervous system that produced your numbers didn't disappear; they idled.

So the useful question was never "how much strength did I lose." It's "how fast does mine come back," and that number varies a lot between lifters, training ages, and the length of the break. A three-week layoff and a three-month one draw different curves. The generic protocols paper over that variance with one cautious default. Your log doesn't have to.

The signature to look for is specific: at a sub-maximal load you used to handle comfortably, RPE spikes on the first sessions back, then decays week over week until it settles near where it started. That decay, that slope, is the whole story.

A layoff and an injury are not the same read

This method is for general breaks: travel, illness, work, life. A return from a strain, tear, or surgical repair is a clinical timeline, not a log-slope one. Do not use your old comeback curve to scope a rehab return. That belongs to you and your physio, not your spreadsheet.

How to find your last comeback in the log

Here's the actual read, step by step.

First, find a gap. Scroll your history for a stretch of 10 or more days with no sessions for a given lift. That's a prior break.

Second, pick one anchor lift you trained on both sides of the gap. A main barbell movement works best because you logged it consistently.

Third, don't look at the load numbers first. Look at RPE at a repeated load. Find a weight and rep count you hit both before the break and in the weeks after, and line up the logged RPE session by session. The load holds steady; watch the effort come down.

What you're reading is the slope. If it took six weeks for a fixed load to drop from RPE 9.5 back to RPE 7, that's your comeback window. Count the weeks. That count is worth more than any percentage a stranger picked for you.

Scope the block from your data, not a template

Once you've read the slope, the current return plans itself.

If your last comeback took six weeks to normalize a fixed load, you don't guess at 60 percent and a linear climb. You start where the effort tells you to, hold loads that let RPE fall on schedule, and expect to be back near baseline in roughly that same window, adjusted for how long this break actually was. Longer gap, stretch the timeline. Same length, trust the rerun.

The difference isn't small. Generic advice tends to leave strong lifters sandbagging for weeks past where they needed to, or ramping too fast because they got impatient with a number that was never theirs. Reading your own curve replaces both the timidity and the guessing with a scope you've already proven on yourself.

The open question is how short a break still leaves a readable curve. A ten-day gap draws a faint one. A two-day one leaves nothing but noise. Somewhere in between is the shortest layoff worth reading back, and it almost certainly differs by training age and by lift.

If you've got several breaks in your log, compare their slopes. A lifter whose comeback window has shortened over the years is watching their own adaptation improve, which is a better progress signal than any single PR.
