A plate on the bar, nothing in the mirror
Your bench e1RM read 275 in January. It reads 300 now. You added a plate's worth of estimated max across a year of honest work, and the guy in the mirror hasn't changed shirts. Same sleeves, same shoulders, same everything.
This is one of the quietest frustrations in an intermediate log, and most of the advice you'll get for it is wrong. It treats a strength number and a size outcome as the same signal wearing different clothes. They aren't. And the difference is already written down in your own data, week by week, if you know which two lines to put next to each other.
Strength and size don't sign the log the same way
Neural adaptation and muscle growth are different jobs, and they leave different fingerprints. Getting stronger at low reps is largely a skill: recruiting more motor units, firing them in better sync, learning to brace and grind a load close to your ceiling. Building muscle is a tissue change, and tissue change shows up as more work capacity in the ranges where tissue actually gets loaded.
Call it the two-fingerprint read. A rising e1RM trend sitting next to flat RPE at your working rep ranges, roughly 8 to 12, is the signature of the first job getting done while the second one idles. Your nervous system got the promotion. Your muscle didn't.
"Just add weight to the bar" is why you missed it
The stock answer to strong-but-not-growing is eat more and add weight to the bar. Eat more is sometimes right. Add weight to the bar is the part that hides the problem, because the bar will happily keep moving on neural gains alone for months.
A heavy triple creeping up week over week feels like progress, and it is, just not the kind you're chasing if the goal is a bigger back. The scale and the tape don't move because the input that grows muscle, hard mechanical work across a lot of sets near failure in hypertrophy ranges, never actually changed. You were paying into the wrong account, and the statement looked fine the whole time.
What the two lines look like side by side
The two adaptations split cleanly on paper. Pin two trends together across a block: your e1RM from top sets, and your working-load at a fixed RPE in the 8 to 12 range, say the weight that puts you at RPE 8 for 10 reps.
When both climb together, that's strength plus size. The muscle is doing more work at the same relative effort. When the e1RM line climbs but the working-load-at-RPE line stays flat, that's the divergence. You can express more force near your max, but your hypertrophy-range work isn't getting any lighter, because there's no new tissue to make it lighter. Same weight, same reps, same effort, month after month, while the top end drifts up and away from it.

Walk it through a real block
Take a lifter running a 5/3/1-style upper progression with backoff hypertrophy work. Over twelve weeks his top-set bench e1RM goes from an estimated 285 to 305. Looks great.
Now pull his backoff data. The weight he uses for 3 sets of 10 at a called RPE 8 sat at 175 in week one, and it's still 175 in week twelve. Same reps. Same reported effort. The heavy end moved 20 pounds. The hypertrophy end moved nothing. That flat backoff line is the whole story, and it's invisible if you only ever look at the PR. The numbers here are an illustration, but the shape is the pattern: the loud signal climbs, the quiet one flatlines.
e1RM math gets noisy above ~8 to 10 reps
Epley and Brzycki agree near a true max and drift apart as reps climb, so a 12-rep e1RM is a soft number. Anchor your estimate off sets of 5 or fewer where the formulas behave, and read the trend, not the decimal.
If you see the gap, you know which lever to pull
If the divergence is real in your log, the fix isn't mysterious. You've been training the neural lever, so pull the other one.
That means more working sets in the 8 to 15 range, taken genuinely close to failure, RPE 9 to 10 on backoffs instead of leaving three in the tank. More weekly volume per muscle. Controlled eccentrics instead of touch-and-go. Less time chasing the top-end single that was already progressing on its own. You don't need a new program so much as a re-weighting of the one you have, and the log tells you exactly how much to shift, because it already told you which lever was stuck.
Two series almost no tracker puts on one axis
Most trackers make this hard to see, not maliciously, just structurally. They plot one strength line and a wall of PRs, which flatters the neural gains and buries the flat backoff trend under a green up-arrow. The divergence lives in two series that rarely share an axis.
