RPE accuracy is not a trait you master once. It drifts with fatigue, novelty, and training age, and only a dense log catches which direction yours moves.
The @8 that was really an @9.5
You called it @8. The bar said otherwise. Rep two crawled up at half the speed of rep one, your hips shot ahead of your chest out of the hole, and the spotter's hands hovered a centimeter off the sleeves without ever touching. On paper that set logged as two reps in reserve. In the rack you had maybe half a rep left.
The number in your notes is now quietly misinforming next week's load. Program says add weight because @8 means there was room. Your legs disagree. Multiply that half-point of self-deception across a training block and the top set you thought was a base is actually your ceiling, dressed up as a floor.
The dial doesn't stay zeroed
Call it calibration drift. Your internal RPE dial is an instrument, and like any instrument it wanders off true. It wanders with cumulative fatigue late in a block, with the novelty of an exercise your nervous system hasn't rehearsed, and with training age itself. A lifter in year one and the same lifter in year five are reading two different gauges.
Here is the part most people never check: the drift has a direction, and it is personal. Some lifters get more conservative as they accumulate years, banking a rep they never actually needed. Others get bolder and start writing @8 next to sets that used to read @9. Neither is a character flaw. It is just a gauge that needs re-zeroing, and you cannot re-zero a gauge you never audit.

"You learn RPE once and then you have it"
The standard advice treats RPE like clipping into pedals: awkward for a few weeks, automatic forever after. Practice a few months, the story goes, and your @8 is calibrated for life.
That framing is why so many intermediate lifters stop questioning their own numbers right when the numbers start lying to them. Calibration is not a switch that flips to on. It is a running relationship between what your body reports and what it can actually do, and that relationship changes as your strength, your fatigue tolerance, and your movement library all change underneath it. Someone who benched 80kg last year and 110kg now is judging a completely different bar. Treating the skill as finished is how a well-trained lifter ends up chronically sandbagging or chronically overreaching without ever noticing which.
What the research actually pins down
RPE-for-lifting has a real evidence base. The repetitions-in-reserve anchoring most serious lifters use (@8 equals roughly two reps left) comes out of the Zourdos-led work on the RIR-based RPE scale in resistance training, and follow-up research found that accuracy is not uniform. It tends to sharpen closer to failure and with training experience, and it degrades on unfamiliar exercises and at lighter, more ambiguous loads.
A Frontiers in Physiology study comparing RPE-based load prescription against fixed percentage-based prescription is the one worth citing here, because it gets at the core issue: a percentage is blind to the day, while RPE tries to read it, and RPE is only as good as the reader The Frontiers in Physiology RPE-vs-percentage-based training paper was authored by ER Helms et al. and published in 2018. Threads on r/Fitness, the RPE explainers in Boostcamp, and Hevy's own logging documentation all circle the same admission: two lifters can stare at the same scale and call the same effort a full point apart.
One session is noise, not signal
A single grindy @8 on a bad-sleep day proves nothing. Drift only shows up as a pattern across weeks: the same direction of error, repeated, on the same lifts. Judge the trend, never the Tuesday.
Reading your own signature
The audit is mechanical once the data exists. Take every set you tagged @8 over a block and look at what followed. When those sets keep beating their rep target on AMRAP weeks, when your "two in reserve" reliably turns into four, you are undercalling. Your @8 is a true @7 and you have been leaving loading on the table. When those same sets fall short, when the last rep grinds and the AMRAP comes up light, you are overcalling. Your @8 is a true @9 and the program has been quietly overreaching you.
Then split it by exercise. Plenty of lifters calibrate tightly on a squat they have grooved for years and drift badly the moment they add a safety-bar variation or a paused bench. The gauge that reads true on the movement you have done ten thousand times is a different gauge on the one you started in March.

Accept that calibration drifts and a few training habits reorganize themselves. You stop treating a stated RPE as a fact and start treating it as a claim your log can check. You re-audit after a hard block, after a deload, after adding a lift, because those are exactly the moments the gauge slips. And you get honest about the fact that your calibration is yours: the coach's @8, the forum consensus @8, and your @8 are three different loads, and only one of them is programming your next mesocycle.
This is the difference between a lifter who has trained for five years and a lifter who has one year of training repeated five times. The first one reads the drift and corrects for it. The second one is still trusting a gauge they zeroed in month three.

None of this works from memory. You cannot eyeball whether your @8 sets outperformed their target last spring, because the human recall of "how hard was that" is precisely the reading that drifts.
