Mike Tuchscherer built the RPE scale that lifters actually use around one idea: reps in reserve. A 10 means zero reps left, the last rep you could finish with the bar path intact. Failure is the rep after that, the one that stalls halfway or caves at the sticking point. Those two things sit right next to each other on a hard set. They are not the same event.

'Failure' crept in as gym shorthand because it's easier to say than 'zero reps in reserve.' The shorthand is fine at the rack. In the log, it costs you.

The collapsed gradient

Call a set RPE 10 every time it grinds and the whole column flattens. The RPE number is a distance measurement, how far a set finished from the edge. An 8 sits two reps back. A 9 sits one rep back. A 10 sits on the line. That spread is the signal.

Round every grinder up to 10 and the spread disappears. Twelve weeks of top sets all read 10. The column stops recording distance and starts recording the fact that the set was hard, which you already knew when you racked the bar. Call it the collapsed gradient: an intensity scale with no gradient left in it.

An RPE column where every hard set reads 10 is a difficulty diary, not an intensity record.

Why 'is 10 RPE failure' is the wrong question

Search that phrase and every top result hands back a definition and stops. Yes it's failure, no it isn't, here's the scale, goodbye. The definition was never the hard part.

The damage lives one step downstream, in what the conflation does to a training history. A lifter who believes 10 equals failure trains to failure to 'earn' the 10, then logs a 10 for every set that felt maximal whether or not a rep was actually in reserve. Two errors compound. The training gets more fatiguing than the program intends, and the record of it turns unreadable.

What autoregulation research actually rewards

Helms and colleagues (2018) make the peer-reviewed case that loading by RPE beats fixed-percentage programming for 1RM outcomes, because the lifter adjusts to the readiness they actually have that day instead of the readiness a spreadsheet assumed weeks ago. That's the argument for autoregulation in one line.

It has a precondition most people skip. The advantage exists only if the RPE you record is reps in reserve, the thing the scale was built to measure. Feed the same system a column of subjective difficulty and autoregulation is adjusting to noise. The scale, mapped honestly, looks like this:

315x3 at RPE 10, two different days

Take one line in a log: 315 for 3 at RPE 10. On a good day that was a genuine near-max, bar speed even, the third rep the honest last one. On a bad day, three weeks deep in a block and underslept, it was a sloppy grind, the third rep a form-breakdown save you'd never repeat under a judge.

Same entry. Same number. The trend line reads them as identical top sets and draws a straight, confident line through two completely different states. So when the real near-max comes and the log says you've been hitting 315x3 at 10 for a month, the plateau flag has nothing to fire on. You buried the signal under a word.

An intensity record has to record intensity

Fixing this takes one decision, held consistently. Reserve 10 for sets that genuinely had zero reps left. When a rep was still in the tank, log the 9 or the 8 even if the set felt like a war. A set can feel maximal and still leave a rep in reserve. The honest column records the reps and lets the feeling go.

Do that for a block and the gradient comes back. Your 10s become rare and meaningful. Your 8s and 9s carry the week-to-week drift that autoregulation feeds on. The column starts answering the question you actually train to ask: how close am I getting, and is it still moving.

What the log does with an honest RPE column

A tracker can only work with the numbers you give it. Feed a plateau signal a column of 10s and it sees a flat line and calls it a stall, or sees nothing and stays quiet. Feed it a real gradient and the math has something to read. The week your top-set RPE climbs while the load holds is the week fatigue is winning, and it shows up before the third stalled session makes it obvious.
