Week four of your last hypertrophy block. Twenty-plus hard sets of back volume on the schedule, the number a chart told you an advanced lifter should be able to run. Your rows stalled anyway. Chins felt like garbage. By week five the weight on paper kept climbing while the bar moved slower every session. You deloaded, blamed sleep, and moved on. The log recorded all of it. Set counts, rep drop-offs, the exact week the top set stopped moving. That block was a clean experiment in what your body could and couldn't recover from, and the answer was sitting in your history the whole time. Most lifters never go back and read it.

The median isn't you

Renaissance Periodization's volume landmarks are population medians. MEV, MRV, the set ranges per muscle group: they describe where a typical trained lifter tends to land, averaged across a lot of bodies. That is genuinely useful on day one, when you have no data of your own. The trap is treating a median as a prescription. Your maximum recoverable volume is not a number someone hands you off a chart. It is a number your own training history has already calculated, block by block, every time a run ended in progress or ended in a wall. Call it the median-isn't-you problem: the table describes lifters in general, and you are trying to program one specific lifter.

The chart gets you to month one. Your log gets you to year five.

Why the chart gets read as a target

Volume charts get read as targets. A lifter sees a muscle group's MRV band, treats hitting the top of it as the goal, then wonders why week five falls apart. The chart never claimed to know your recovery. It can't. It doesn't know your training age, your sleep, your job's stress load, how much your last block already dug into you, or how you personally respond to high frequency versus high per-session volume. Population data smooths all of that away by design. For a beginner the smoothing is fine, because almost any reasonable starting volume works and you have nothing better to go on. For a lifter three or four years in, the smoothing throws away the most valuable dataset in the room: the record of how you specifically have responded to volume, over and over, already.

Even the set is a shakier unit than the tables imply

This isn't a fringe complaint. Stronger By Science has made a sustained case for rethinking training volume, arguing that even the thing we count volume in, the hard set, is looser than a table implies once you account for proximity to failure, load, and exercise selection. When practitioners at that level are reopening how volume should be measured at all, treating a fixed set-count table as a personal ceiling looks thinner still. Worth being fair to RP: their own material presents the landmarks as individualized starting ranges you are meant to adjust from, not as fixed prescriptions. The chart was always the day-one tool. The only live question is what replaces it once you have your own data, and for an advanced lifter the answer is the log.

How to find your MRV: ask your log four questions

Here is how you actually read it. Pull your last three or four completed blocks and line up two things per block: weekly set count per muscle group, and what happened to the key lifts by the end. You are hunting the crossover, the point where more volume stopped buying progress and started buying fatigue. The block where bench moved beautifully on fourteen sets a week tells you your MEV for chest is lower than you feared. The block where you pushed to the low twenties and stalled by week five, then needed an unplanned deload, maps your MRV ceiling with more precision than any chart. Do it per lift, because your MRV for squats and your MRV for lateral raises are not the same number and never were. Four questions, asked of a real log, get you further than the whole table.

Read trends, not one block

A single block can stall for reasons that have nothing to do with volume: a bad sleep stretch, a work crunch, load progression that got greedy. Your personal MRV reads cleanly only across three to four blocks pointing the same way. One data point is an anecdote, not a ceiling.

What changes when your ceiling is readable

If your MRV is readable, programming stops being a guess dressed up as science. You set your top-end volume from the ceiling your own blocks have already mapped, instead of copying a template's progression and hoping. You know which lift can take another two sets and which one is already at the edge. You catch the stall in week three instead of eating a wrecked week five and an unplanned deload. The lifter who does this hasn't learned a secret. They just stopped throwing away their own results. Three or four years of blocks is a long experiment. The only real waste is not reading the output.

This is easy to say and annoying to do if your history lives in a drawer of screenshots or a spreadsheet you dread scrolling.
