The number that isn't in your log
Week six of the block, and your top set of incline press finally stalled. You add it up in your head on the drive home: five weeks that felt heavy, then this. Too much, or not enough?
So you open the app that captured every one of those sessions. You tap through the history and it hands you back exactly what you already lived. Tonight's weight. Tonight's reps. A tidy little line for that one lift over time.
What it won't tell you is the number that actually decides whether the last six weeks grew anything. How many hard sets your chest saw per week, summed across the whole block, and whether that total ever cleared the floor where growth starts. The log is complete. The answer isn't in it.
The accumulation blind spot
Call it the accumulation blind spot. The grain a hypertrophy program actually runs on isn't the workout, it's weekly hard sets per muscle group, summed across a six to eight week mesocycle.
That single trend line, chest sets per week climbing or sagging across the block, tells you whether you spent the month above your minimum effective volume or idling just under it. Almost every tracker can show you the first half of that sentence: tonight's sets, this lift's history. None of them show you the sum.
And the sum is the whole point of a block. You don't program a mesocycle to make one Tuesday harder. You program it to accumulate a dose over weeks, then judge the dose.
Most apps are built for tonight, not the month
The reason the view is missing isn't laziness. It's what a tracker optimizes for. Capture speed, last-session recall, a clean per-exercise chart. All of that serves the lifter in week one, standing at the rack, trying to beat last time.
But the per-exercise chart is exactly what hides the muscle-group total. Incline press, flat dumbbell, dips, cable flyes: four separate lines, four separate histories, all of them feeding the same muscle. No app rolls them up, so the one number that matters for a hypertrophy decision stays scattered across four screens.
So the serious lifter does what serious lifters have always done. Exports to a spreadsheet, builds the rollup by hand, and quietly stops trusting the app for the decision it should own.
What the discourse is actually asking for
This isn't a hunch. It's a request lifters are filing in writing.
There's a live Garmin Connect feature request thread where users ask for exactly this: block-level muscle-group volume tracking, inside software they've already paid a premium hardware ecosystem for. That's the strongest possible signal the gap is real. People who bought the expensive watch are asking the app to build the view the watch can't.
The programming side has been settled for years. Stronger By Science has made the case repeatedly that volume is the primary hypertrophy lever you can actually manipulate. A 2017 dose-response meta-analysis (Schoenfeld, Ogborn, Krieger) found more weekly sets kept producing more growth, with the clearest gains above roughly ten hard sets per muscle group per week. And Renaissance Periodization's volume landmarks gave the field the vocabulary for it. The whole framework assumes you can see your weekly per-muscle total. Almost no logging app lets you.
The volume landmarks, briefly
Renaissance Periodization's shorthand for the dose. MV (maintenance) holds muscle. MEV (minimum effective volume) is the weekly floor where growth starts. MAV (maximum adaptive volume) is the productive middle. MRV (maximum recoverable volume) is the ceiling before recovery fails. Every one of these is a *weekly sets per muscle group* number, which is exactly the view most logs never total up.
Six weeks, one muscle group, in numbers
Take a lifter running an RP-style hypertrophy block. Chest gets hit twice a week across incline, flat, and flyes. Every session felt honest, RPE 8 to 9, nothing skipped.
At the session grain, the block looks fine. Weights crept up. No obvious miss. But roll every pressing and fly movement up into one weekly chest total, draw the MEV line, and a different story shows up: one week quietly fell below the floor, and the back half never touched the top of the productive range.
That week you thought was brutal? It was low-set and heavy. Great for a strength cue, under-dosed for growth. The lifter would have carried a wrong conclusion into the next block, because the log never contradicted him.

What changes when you can see the block
With the map in front of you, the next mesocycle stops being a memory exercise. You add a set to the week that fell under. You back off the muscle group that lived at MRV for a month and stopped recovering. You spot the deload you needed before the third stalled week forced it on you.
None of that requires an app to tell you what to do. It requires the app to show you what happened, at the grain the decision is made on. The lifter already knows how to read MEV against MRV. He's just been reading it blind.
The session log tells you what you did. The block map tells you whether it worked.
The rollup is a math problem, not a coaching problem
Here's why no app should need to be clever about this. The block-level volume map is arithmetic. Tag each exercise to the muscles it trains, count the hard sets per week, sum them across the block, plot the running total against your landmarks. That's it. There's nothing to predict and nothing to prescribe.

The honest open question is fractional attribution. When a set of barbell rows hits back hard and biceps a little, does it count as one back set and half a biceps set, or full credit to both? Different frameworks answer differently, and the answer changes every rollup downstream.
