Your minimum effective volume is already in your log. You just haven't read it.
Population-average volume landmarks are a starting guess. The only honest read on your own minimum effective volume is already sitting in the low-volume weeks of your training log.
The block you thought you wasted
Ten days in a hotel gym. Two adjustable dumbbells that cap at 50, a cable stack with a bent pin, no rack. You press, you row, you do split squats until your lungs quit, and you leave. Call it half your normal weekly sets, probably less for legs.
You come home braced for the damage. Then the first heavy session back moves exactly the way it did before you flew out, and the incline press you'd been stuck on for a month finally goes up a rung.
Most lifters file that under luck, or supercompensation, or "the deload I didn't plan," and move on. And that block goes in the bin. Which is a shame, because it's the cleanest experiment you ran all year. Ten days of stripped-back training with the load held roughly constant is the only honest look you will ever get at how little work your chest and back actually need to keep moving.
MEV is a bracket you've been narrowing for years
Volume landmarks came out of Renaissance Periodization's programming framework and they're genuinely useful furniture: MV for the work that holds what you've built, MEV for the least weekly volume that still produces growth, MAV for the productive middle, MRV for the ceiling where recovery breaks down. Stronger by Science and the wider evidence-based coaching world argue the edges of those numbers constantly, which should tell you something about how firm the numbers are.
The framework is a coordinate system. The published values are a population's coordinates, not yours.
Here is the useful reframe: every disrupted block in your history is an accidental trial. Travel, a brutal cut, a shoulder that wouldn't tolerate pressing, three weeks of a newborn. In each one, volume for some muscle group fell hard while load stayed roughly where it was, and your body returned a verdict you never bothered to read. String enough of those together and you aren't estimating your MEV from a table. You're bracketing it from your own data, one disrupted block at a time.
Why a study average can't be your floor
Volume-response research reports means, and the mean is the least interesting number in it. The spread between the lifter who grows on 8 hard sets a week and the one who needs closer to 20 is the actual finding, and that spread is what a landmark table has to flatten to be printable. RP has always presented the landmarks as adjustable starting points. It's the internet that turned them into a prescription.
Then there's the drift. Your MEV for a muscle group isn't a constant even within your own body. It moves with training age, with how close to failure you're actually taking sets, with exercise selection and stretch position, with calories, sleep, and how much life is currently on fire. A quad MEV established during a maintenance phase two years ago has no authority over a cut.
So the question "what is my MEV for back?" is malformed. The answerable version is: across the low-volume windows in my log, what's the lowest weekly set count at which my back lifts still went up, and under what conditions.
What the minimal-dose literature actually supports
The reduced-volume research is more encouraging than gym-floor consensus suggests. Bickel and colleagues put trained subjects on sharply reduced volume for an extended maintenance period and found that a fraction of the original work held size and strength, with younger subjects able to maintain on less than older ones needed. Androulakis-Korakakis and colleagues later reviewed the minimum dose required to keep 1RM strength climbing in trained lifters and landed on a number of weekly sets that most people would call an insultingly small amount of work A single set performed 1–3 times per week was sufficient to induce significant 1RM strength gains in resistance-trained men. Spiering and colleagues reached a similar shape of conclusion in their minimal-dose review for preserving strength and endurance Published in J Strength Cond Res 2021, volume 35, issue 5, pages 1449-1458. Two things follow. Maintaining is cheap, far cheaper than lifters behave as though it is. And progressing is cheaper than the high-volume default assumes, for some people, for some muscles, some of the time.
The literature can tell you that a low floor exists. It cannot tell you where yours sits for delts versus hamstrings. Only your log does that.
How to read the low-volume windows in a multi-year log
Open the whole history, not the last mesocycle. You're looking for windows, and windows are only visible at the scale of years.
First, aggregate weekly hard sets per muscle group, not per session and not per exercise. Count sets taken within a couple of reps of failure; warm-ups and back-offs at RPE 6 don't belong in the tally.
Second, flag every window where one muscle's weekly set count sat at least 30% below its trailing three-month median for three weeks or longer. Three weeks is the minimum honest duration, and the reason is in the callout below.
Third, ignore what happened to your lifts during the window. Read the four weeks after it. Did the top set on that muscle's primary movement go up, hold, or slide? Did rep PRs at a fixed load appear or vanish?
A worked example. Say a lifter three years into RP-style hypertrophy blocks pulls their log and finds four qualifying windows: a two-week work trip, a nine-week cut, a six-week period of babying an elbow, and a stretch of night shifts. Back volume dropped to roughly 8 weekly sets in three of the four, and in all three the chest-supported row kept adding reps at the same load afterward. Quads dropped to 6 weekly sets during the same windows, and in two of the three the leg press top set came back down. That lifter now knows something a table can't tell them: their back floor is somewhere at or below 8 sets, and their quad floor is above 6. That's not a number yet. It's a bracket, and every future disrupted block narrows it.

Don't read the first two weeks
A low-volume window that immediately follows a high-volume push will almost always look great, because you're seeing fatigue dissipating, not a floor being found. Delayed adaptation flatters the first sessions back. Require the window to run three weeks or longer and read the trajectory from week three onward. Windows shorter than that tell you about your taper, not your MEV.
The floor changes what you do with the ceiling
MRV tells you when you've overreached. MEV tells you what a muscle needs to keep moving when you have nothing spare to give it. Most programming conversations obsess over the ceiling, which is the wrong end of the range for an advanced lifter, because the ceiling only matters in the phases where everything else in life is cooperating.
Know your floors and three decisions get easier. On a cut, you defend the floor per muscle instead of slashing volume evenly and watching your weak point regress. During travel, you know which two movements are load-bearing and which four are optional. And in a normal block, you can pull a muscle group that's sitting well above its floor back toward it, and spend the recovered capacity on the lagging one.
That last move is the real prize. The constraint on most experienced lifters isn't finding more volume. It's finding out which muscles have been quietly overpaid for years.
The block you thought you wasted is the cleanest read you'll ever get on your own floor.
Why most logs can't answer this
Every method above depends on one thing: weekly hard sets per muscle group, visible across years, with the low-volume windows still intact. That's where it usually falls apart. Plenty of trackers record sets beautifully at the session level and never roll them up by muscle across time, so a nine-week cut from 2024 shows up as a stack of individual workouts and not as a window. Switch apps and the older windows disappear entirely, which is how lifters end up with four years of training and eight months of readable history.
