Your Log Already Knows If You're Training a Muscle Too Often

The RPE gap between Monday and Thursday is a frequency signal.

Monday's squat at RPE 8, Thursday's at RPE 9.5, same load. That delta isn't a bad day. It's your recovery ceiling telling you the frequency is too high.

Same weight, three days later, and it grinds

Monday, back squat, 315 for a top set of five. The log reads RPE 8. Thursday rolls around, same 315, same five reps, and the last two grind out slow. You mark it RPE 9.5.

Nothing changed on the bar. Sleep held, food held, you felt fine in the warmup. So where did the extra rep and a half of effort come from? It came from Monday. That squat is still being paid off, and the RPE line is the invoice.

The same-load drift is a frequency readout

Call it the same-load drift. When identical load and reps cost more RPE on the week's second exposure than the first, that gap is a measurement, not a mood. It puts a number on one question: is the current frequency for this movement sitting above its per-week recovery ceiling?

Half a point across two sessions is mostly noise. A full point or more, week after week, on the same movement pattern? That's the recovery debt from session one bleeding into session two. And it's already sitting in your log. Most lifters were just never taught to read it that way.

Am I overtraining this muscle, or just sore?

Most lifters answer that with soreness. Legs feel trashed Thursday morning, so squats get pushed to Friday or dropped. The problem is timing. DOMS peaks somewhere around 24 to 48 hours after the session and has a loose, unreliable relationship with how recovered the muscle's actual force output is. You can feel wrecked and pull a rep PR, or feel fresh and struggle through a warmup. Soreness lags the signal you care about, and sometimes points the wrong way entirely.

The other default is the frequency debate itself: three times a week versus four, full-body versus splits, argued as if there's a universal answer. There isn't one. Frequency is a per-lifter, per-movement variable, and the drift in your log is closer to the truth than any template.

Not the same as a deload flag

Same-load drift compares two sessions inside one week on the same movement. That's a different read from week-over-week fatigue accumulation (the deload question) and from total weekly volume closing on your MRV. Three signals, three separate reads. Drift is the frequency-specific one.

What RPE actually measures here

RPE only works as a frequency signal if the number is honest, and there's a real methodology behind honest. Mike Tuchscherer's Reactive Training Systems put repetitions-in-reserve RPE into powerlifting, and Zourdos and colleagues validated a RIR-based RPE scale in 2016: RPE 8 means roughly two reps in reserve, 9.5 means you're a hair from failure. Anchored to reps left in the tank, the scale gets consistent enough to trust small deltas.

On frequency itself, the research is almost freeing. When Schoenfeld, Grgic, and Krieger equated weekly volume across frequencies, frequency on its own showed little independent effect on hypertrophy. There's no magic number of sessions. What matters is whether you recover between the exposures you've chosen, and that's exactly what the drift measures, for your body, not a study average.

What it looks like in the log

Picture two lifters running the same squat twice a week, same top-set target. One has frequency calibrated to recovery. The other is a session past their ceiling.

The calibrated lifter's Thursday sits within about half a point of Monday, week over week. Steady. The over-frequency lifter starts each week fine on Monday, drifts a full point or more by Thursday, and worse, Monday itself creeps up over the weeks as the debt compounds. The load never changed. The RPE told the whole story.

What changes when you read frequency this way

When the drift becomes the input, frequency stops being a debate and becomes a dial you set from evidence. Squat pattern drifting a full point by the second session, week after week? Pull the second exposure back, drop it to a lighter technique day, or swap in a variation that shares less fatigue. Drift settles under half a point and holds there? You've got room to add a session if the goal warrants it.

Soreness tells you what happened. The drift tells you whether to change anything. One is a feeling that lags a day or two. The other is a number sitting in Thursday's entry, waiting for you to line it up against Monday's.

The read only works if the capture is honest

All of this rests on one thing: the log has to hold per-set RPE, entered fast enough that you actually enter it, and it has to line up the same movement across the week so the comparison is one glance, not a scroll through history.

What we're still watching

The clean case is one movement repeated in a week. The messier, more interesting one is cross-movement drift: front squats on Monday quietly taxing Thursday's deadlift, or overhead press bleeding into the bench. Same principle, shared fatigue across patterns instead of within one. It's harder to read, and we're still working out how much of it a log can surface honestly. For now, start where it's obvious.
