The morning after your best session
The morning after your best squat session in a month, the band on your wrist flashes amber. Recovery 41 percent. Strain exceeds recovery. Consider an easy day. You slept seven hours. You feel good. Last night the top single moved faster than it has all block, the kind of rep that tells you the program is working. The log says primed. The wrist says stand down. One of these two things has watched you train for three years. The other took a single reading at six in the morning and drew a conclusion. That gap is where the recovery-dashboard promise quietly breaks for anyone who actually lifts heavy.
The readiness inversion
Call it the readiness inversion. A wrist-based recovery score grades the day the training worked as the day to back off, and grades the day nothing happened as the day to go. The hardware isn't broken. The number is measured correctly. It's answering a question strength training never asked. A body of research on HRV-guided training (Plews, Buchheit, and others working with runners and cyclists) found that adjusting hard days against a rolling HRV baseline can match or beat a fixed training plan. That works because the thing HRV measures, autonomic recovery from cardiovascular load, is close to the thing an endurance athlete needs to know before another aerobic session. Strength runs on a different adaptation model. A heavy session's cost shows up as muscle and connective-tissue damage, neural fatigue, and glycogen depletion. Those recover on a timeline that a single dawn HRV reading barely sees. Borrowing a metric that fits aerobic recovery and pointing it at a barbell is a category error, even when the sensor is accurate.

Aerobic recovery and strength recovery are different adaptation models, and a metric tuned for one doesn't automatically read the other.
A low reading the morning after a hard session is the training working
Resistance training that's actually hard suppresses HRV the next morning. That's well-documented physiology: the autonomic nervous system tilts sympathetic after a heavy bout, and parasympathetic tone, the thing HRV mostly reflects, drops for a day or more. In other words, the harder and more productive the session, the redder tomorrow's gauge. Read the score literally and you'd deload every time you made progress. A rest day inverts it. Do nothing physical and the autonomic system calms right down, so the gauge glows green even if you slept badly. The reading is real. How a low morning HRV reading should be read depends on the sport. Directional, based on documented post-exercise autonomic response.
The week that exposes it
Walk a normal training week. Tuesday you squat heavy and grind a top single at RPE 9, clean and fast, a genuine block-best. Wednesday morning the score reads 44 percent, caution, and nudges you to skip the accessory work your program wants. So you skip it, and you leave adaptation on the table. Sunday is a full rest day. You sleep six broken hours and do nothing physical. Monday the score reads green, primed, go hard, and it reads greener than the morning after your best session did, because for a lifter the day-to-day HRV swing is mostly driven by yesterday's training, not last night's sleep. The gauge scored your best training as a warning and your idle day as a green light. Anyone who's run a block can feel how backwards that is.

Flip the hierarchy and the fix is obvious. The readiness question for a lifter isn't how settled your autonomics were at 6 a.m. It's whether your top set is still moving, whether your RPE at a fixed load is drifting up, whether tonnage across the block is trending or stalling. That information lives in your training log, and it comes from twelve weeks of your own performance, not one overnight sample. Load trend tells you if you're absorbing the work. RPE drift tells you when a given weight starts costing more than it used to. Performance per session tells you, session over session, whether bar speed is holding. Stack those and you get a readiness read with real predictive weight behind it, because it's built from the exact thing you're trying to predict.
