What a Useful Training Note Actually Contains (And What's Just Noise)

A training note is only useful if you can read it cold.

A note that says 'felt heavy' is noise in six months. Here's the minimal structure that turns a log into data you can actually query.

The note you can't decode

Open your training log from March. Find the entry that just says 'felt heavy, grind on the last two.' Now try to use it. Was 315 heavy because you were under-recovered, because your setup drifted, or because that rep target was always going to be a fight? You have no idea. The set happened, you wrote it down, and the note gives you nothing you can act on today. That's the failure mode almost nobody names when they argue about logging. Not the missed days. The days you logged and captured no signal at all.

The cold-read test

The difference between a log that teaches you something and one you scroll past isn't effort, and it isn't consistency. It's structure at the moment you write the note. Call it the cold-read test: an entry is only useful if a version of you six months out can read it and reconstruct the session without remembering it. 'Felt heavy' fails cold. 'RPE 9, cut depth on the last two, five hours of sleep' passes. Same set, same ten seconds of typing. One is a data point. The other is a mood you'll never be able to verify.

Why 'just log consistently' misses

The standard advice stops at 'log every session, stay consistent,' as if the count of entries were the point. But a note that says nothing stays worthless no matter how many times you write it. Log religiously for a year and you can still be stuck on the one question a log exists to answer: what actually changed between the block that worked and the block that stalled. Most lifters who already track aren't lazy about it. They're writing entries shaped like a diary, one line of vibe per session, when the job wants entries shaped like data. A hundred well-formed notes beat a thousand 'good session' lines, and it isn't close.

What coaches mean by 'lab notebook'

Strength publications keep circling the same metaphor for a reason. StrongFirst, T-Nation, and editorial like Outside Online describe the training log in the same terms: closer to a lab notebook than a journal. The point of a lab notebook is that another person, or a later you, can repeat the experiment from the record alone. That's the whole standard. Search behavior confirms the appetite. 'Should you keep a workout log' is a recurring People-Also-Ask, and the answers that rank all say yes, then quietly skip the harder question of what goes in each entry. The metaphor is right. The procedure is what's missing, and the procedure is the whole point.

What to write, field by field

A useful note carries four things at most, usually fewer. Effort quality, anchored to load and reps, so RPE 9 actually means something. The limiting factor, whatever capped the set: depth, grip, a stall off the floor, or plain fatigue. One recovery constraint if it was real, like short sleep or a brutal work week, because that's what explains a number that looks wrong later. And at most one coaching cue you were running, so a good session is repeatable and a bad one is diagnosable. Everything else is filler. Weather, gym temperature, a vague mood: none of it changes how you'd program next week. Here's the same session written two ways.

The cold-read test

Before you close the log, ask: could I reconstruct this set from the note alone, with zero memory of the session? If not, you logged a mood, not a data point.

Twelve weeks in, you have a dataset

Do this for twelve weeks and what the log is changes. Instead of an archive you scroll, you hold a set of comparable records. Every squat session has an RPE, a limiting factor, and a recovery note in the same shape. Now you can query it. Pull every session where the limiting factor was depth and see whether it clusters around low-sleep weeks. Line up your top-set RPE across the block and watch it drift up two sessions before the weight stopped moving. That drift is a plateau you can see coming. It only exists if the notes were structured the same way every time. And retroactive structure is impossible. You can't add RPE to a set you finished in March.

The log rarely fails from missed days. It fails from notes that say nothing.
