Six weeks into a new block, the top set grinds harder than it did in week two, and the lifter opens a browser tab to shop for the next program. Fresh template, clean spreadsheet, a restart that feels like progress.

This is the most common self-sabotage in intermediate training, and it doesn't read like quitting. It reads like ambition. The lifter running 5/3/1 drops it for GZCLP, runs GZCLP for a month, jumps to a hypertrophy block someone posted on r/weightroom, and eight months later has three half-finished logs and roughly the same numbers. The program was never the problem. The switching was.

The session floor

The answer the search results bury under twelve-week defaults is simpler and more personal: you've run a program long enough to judge it when each main lift has logged enough sessions to separate signal from noise. Not calendar weeks. Sessions per lift.

Progress is measured in exposures, and a single heavy top set tells you almost nothing on its own. Bar speed moves with sleep, food, stress, and how warm the room is. One flat week inside that scatter is a data point, not a verdict. Run the same check and one of three things is true. Fewer than four sessions: keep going, you don't have a read yet. Four to six with a clear upward trend: the program is working, stay. Four to six flat or falling with rising effort: you've earned the switch.
